Measurements under high pressure help us to understand the microscopic properties of matter. Applying pressure may cause a structural, electronic or some other phase transition giving one the opportunity to investigate the properties of a sample during a controllable change of its volume. The development of techniques necessary to achieve very high hydrostatic pressures is a challenging task for engineers and materials scientists.
